I am in the second week of
the two-week intensive for our Spring doctor of ministry courses. Currently, we
are not allowed to say the “C” word [shhh, it’s church]. We are talking about our communities of faith, and the
places where our communities of faith meet. Before the word became off-limits,
our professor asked us to draw our image of “church.” This is my image. The triquetra in the center is my favorite
image for the Trinity. Around it is the dance of all who make up the community
of faith. What I could not draw is how at the same time, the center of the
dance is the Trinity, the dance is also within the Trinity. And the movement,
all of it, is the never-ceasing love of God.
“We declare to
you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our
eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of
life— this life was revealed, and we have seen it and testify to it, and
declare to you the eternal life that was with the Father and was revealed to
us— we declare to you what we have seen and heard so that you also may have
fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with his
Son Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that our joy may be complete.”
